Sisterhood Information
Sisterhood President's Message

I recently went home to Kansas to visit my parents. It was my first time home in many years and I loved being back in such a familiar place, seeing all the things that had changed and all the things that were reassuringly still the same. Of course that includes the synagogue where I was named, became a bat mitzvah and married. For as long as I can remember, the synagogue has been the center of my parents’ lives. I don’t know if it was being Jewish in Kansas and seeking out others who were like them, or just finding a comfortable place to call home, but their social, religious and cultural lives revolved around the synagogue. And so I grew up there – cooking in the kitchen, running through the halls, hiding from Hebrew school teachers in the bathrooms. Going back was a real treat. But when it was over, I was so happy to get back on an airplane and return to my home in Massachusetts – and Temple Emanuel. This is where we’ve laid down our roots – the center of my family’s world, the place where my children will return. And while in the words of that famous Kansas philosopher, Dorothy, there’s no place like home, there’s nothing like a trip away to realize that home is where your family, friends and heart are. And I’m lucky enough to have found that at Temple Emanuel. I hope that by getting involved in Sisterhood, whether by attending one of our many events or volunteering, it feels like home for you too. And best of all, you don’t need ruby slippers to get here…....…………….……….Dana Katz

Women of Reform Judaism is the voice, the presence and the venue for action of the women of Reform Judaism in the synagogue, the Jewish community, interfaith groups and the general, local, national and international community. It is the women's agency and an affiliate of the Union for Reform Judaism (URJ), the central body of Reform Judaism in North America. The founder of NFTY (the North American Federation of Temple Youth) and a founder of the Jewish Braille Institute, WRJ is a member of the World Union for Progressive Judaism and works on behalf of the Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion.

WRJ brings together more than 75,000 Jewish women in over 500 Sisterhoods throughout the United States and in Canada and in other countries: Panama, Netherlands Antilles, Argentina, Brazil, the United Kingdom, Belgium, the Netherlands, Israel, the Republic of South Africa, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Founded in 1913 as the National Federation of Temple Sisterhoods (NFTS), the organization was established during a historic period of advancing struggle for recognition and equality for women.  Empowered by the Reform Movement 's precept of placing Jewish women on a plane of religious equality with men, NFTS became active in areas that continue to define its work today.
