As I have mentioned before, I usually struggle to come up with a bulletin article theme. This month, it is a little different. I know that people do not like it when the President talks about finances, but I feel at this time it is necessary. At a recent Finance Committee meeting we reviewed the current state of the temple’s finances. Believe me we are NOT in dire straits, but we do need to be careful. The Finance Committee and Executive Board realized last year that with the current economic conditions, this year would be more difficult than usual. This has been addressed already in many ways. The temple staff is working this year without raises and we have shaved expenses wherever possible. We are continually looking at additional ways to reduce expenses, and our Fund Raising Committee is working hard to find new and creative ways to supplement our revenue.
However the biggest portion of our revenues does come from dues. We made a conscious decision last year not to raise dues as we know that many have also been individually impacted by the economy. Dues collection is a critical factor in our completing the Temple’s financial obligations. At this point it appears we are running behind our normal dues receipts.
For some, the temple dues are not their top priority and that is understandable. However, it is important to consider what it is providing. We are offering many services to the congregation. We have a strong vibrant Religious School where we are instilling a crucial bond between our temple, its Jewish traditions and our youth. Although parents pay for their children to attend religious school, a major portion of this education is subsidized by the temple. And as with the Public schools, just because your child is no longer in school, it is important that all contribute. Each generation is responsible for helping to educate the next. This concept is important and must be considered when you are paying your dues bill.
For those that may be struggling, please do your best to meet the obligation. Consider making monthly payments if that will help. But please help us get back on track. For others who may be in a better position, this may be a good time to consider one of the benefactor categories to increase your contribution. In any case please do what you can.
Thanks for considering my comments and since Passover will be here before the next bulletin, I would like to take this moment to wish you and your families a Happy Passover.
